What horse boarding & riding lessons really cost in New Jersey (2026)

Key findings

• Full board in NJ is posted from $300 to $1,250 a month, with a median of $595 across 35 prices.
• By region (full-board median): Northwest NJ: $517 (8) · North NJ: $625 (4) · Hunterdon & Somerset: $875 (7) · Central NJ: $600 (9) · South Jersey: $535 (7).
• Cheapest counties (3+ full-board prices): Warren ($450), Burlington ($467). Priciest: Hunterdon ($812), Morris ($700).
• Indoor arena alone doesn't explain price in our data: full-board prices whose listing mentions an indoor arena have a median of $575 (7 prices) vs $597 (28) for the rest. Many listings don't mention arenas at all, so this comparison is weak.
• Discipline and service level matter most: the highest prices are training, rehab or show programs (e.g. $1,650 rehab, $2,200 training board), or barns that require lessons with board (Someday Stables: 8+ lessons/rides a month).
• Partial board is rarely posted: only 1 NJ barn in our set publishes a partial-board price.

NJ sales tax on board

New Jersey's Division of Taxation says a business that boards horses must register as a seller and that charges for boarding horses are taxable; separately stated stall rental is also taxable (NJ Division of Taxation guidance). That's why barns post rates as "+ NJ sales tax" (Toy Box Farm, Fox Trot, Fair Fox, Cesario), "tax not included" (Trinity), or "includes NJ taxes" (Eddis Farm). Good Times Farm shows the math: $930 full board plus $18.55 tax on the stall portion = $948.55. When comparing barns, check whether tax is in the number.

Full vs. partial vs. pasture vs. self-care: what's usually included

Based on what the barns above actually list:

• Full board: stall, daily stall cleaning and bedding, hay and grain fed 2–4× a day, daily turnout, water. Many also include blanketing and feeding owner-supplied supplements (e.g. TK Equestrian, Toy Box Farm, Trinity Stables). Some "full board" excludes grain (M & M Stable) or charges for food and bedding on top (Navesink Stables: $550 + food/bedding).
• Partial board: a stall with the barn doing part of the work on set days; Navesink lists $300 plus a negotiated amount for part-time care.
• Pasture / field board: 24/7 turnout with a run-in shed, water and usually hay; grain may be owner-supplied (Moonlite Acres, Lebanon private farm).
• Self-care / rough board: you supply hay, feed and bedding and do the chores (Cranbury Brook Farm: stall + pasture, you feed, $250).

Hidden and extra costs

Posted add-on prices we found in NJ:

• Blanket changing: $30/month extra at Fair Fox Farms (included at TK Equestrian and Trinity).
• Medication administration: $20/week; deworming $12 every other month; training rides $40 each (Fair Fox Farms).
• Training add-ons: $300/month limited conditioning, $460/month moderate training (Good Times Farm).
• Lesson minimums: Someday Stables requires at least 8 lessons or training rides a month with board.

Farrier, vet, dental and extra-bedding charges are almost always billed separately by the provider or barn, but very few NJ barns post those numbers, so we don't quote averages. Ask each barn.

Questions to ask before you sign

1. Is NJ sales tax included in the quoted price?
2. How many hay feedings, and is grain included, which brand, and how much?
3. How many hours of turnout, individual or group, and what happens in bad weather?
4. Are blanketing, fly spray, supplements and holding for the vet/farrier included or extra?
5. Is there an indoor arena, and what are the ring hours around lessons?
6. Can I use my own trainer, vet and farrier? Are there lesson or training minimums?
7. How much notice is needed to leave, and is there a deposit?

Lessons in NJ

Private lessons in our set run $45–$85 (median $65, 11 prices), depending on length (30 vs 60 min) and whether you ride a school horse. Semi-private and group lessons are cheaper per rider ($45–$75). Packages save about 10%: Furlyn Farm's 10 one-hour lessons are $765 vs. $850 bought singly; Spring Valley's 10 half-hour privates are $450 vs. $500.
